5 Easy Steps to Find the Perfect Niche

“Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.”
Herman Cain

You want to begin your blogging career, but there is one fundamental thing you find yourself stuck on… What are you going to write about? Some may have it already figured out (that’s awesome!), but for others this can be an incredibly difficult question.

The greatest thing about blog writing is that their are no rules. If you want to use it as an online journal, you are entitled to that. You don’t have to find a specific niche to focus on. However, at the same time, if you want to build your online following and develop a successful blog I would 110% recommend finding your ideal niche. This will enable you to target a specific audience and build a loyal following.

Finding the perfect niche relies on a few factors…

1. You are passionate about what you are writing about;
2. It is unique and addresses the needs of the readers; and
3. The content you deliver is quality and valuable.

What is a niche though?

A niche is kind of like a topic, but a very specific topic aimed at a certain group of people. It is created as a means to address the needs and wants of that group which may not be addressed by other niches.

I want to share a wonderful example. Hannah Martin (just a blog I like) is a New Zealander with a travel blog. She finished her accounting degree but decided that she wanted more then just a desk job. Consequently, she has been traveling and blogging now for more then 2 years. Her success stems down to her choice of niche, which wasn’t simply ‘travel’ but ‘travel for introverts’… it’s really ingenious! Her niche was very specific and offered a quirky perspective to travel. Check her out here.

Now it is your turn to create your niche 🙂

Finding Your Perfect Niche

1 Brainstorm

At the moment, you are in the ideas stage. Use this time to think about who you are as a person, from your personality or physical strengths to your favourite hobbies and interests.

What do you want to write about?
What are you passionate about?
What do you like to do in your free time?

These type of questions will help stimulate your thinking and come up with with possible niche ideas. Jot these down.

2 How can you make your niche stand out?

This is the million dollar question. You have your topic, now it’s time to make it unique. What group of people will you target? Don’t simply choose fitness. Delve deeper into this area… maybe you want to focus on Yoga or Body-weight fitness. Don’t simply choose to write about fashion. Delve deeper into organic fashion brands or custom-made T-shirt designs.

3 The Verdict

How did you go? Now that you have spent a little time exploring possible ideas for your quirky niche, choose 1-2 that really work well for you.

4 Research

Being informed on the topic you are thinking of focusing on is key for your success. You cannot create a successful blog where you do not know much about or you don’t know the market for it. Using google trends is a great avenue to do this:

trends 1

Here, I have explored and compared fitness, health and nutrition. Google is able to identify search related averages for each of them and identify where and if there is a market for them (as identified on the world map). Google also offers related search options which is also very useful when searching for a niche.

5 Write a list of possible blog posts

Lets test out your newly chosen niche. Now that you have identified that their is a demand for your niche, write a list of possible blog post titles. The reason I suggest this is because you need to choose a topic that you can easily write about! If you struggle to come up with anything you may need to go back to the drawing board and think of an area you feel confident about.

Congratulations! You are well on your way to creating your new blog 🙂
